About us

Since 1980

Since 1980, ARFC has looked after the Recreation Field for everyone in the local area. Our purpose is simple: to provide and maintain recreational and leisure facilities that make life better in Alconbury, Alconbury Weston and the neighbouring Huntingdonshire villages.

In the mid-1980s, local volunteers built the Pavilion, which has been the centre of village sport and social life ever since. The site has grown a lot since then. We've added a second set of changing rooms, a children's play area, extra storage, six more acres of land for grass pitches, a floodlit all-weather pitch and an outdoor gym. All of this was paid for by reinvesting the charity's income, by grants and by the generosity of local people.

ARFC is a registered charity (no. 279991). It is run by a board of volunteer trustees who give their time to keep the field safe, well maintained and open to everyone.

Our partnership

Alconbury Sports & Social Club

The bar and social areas in the Pavilion are run by the Alconbury Sports & Social Club (ASSC), a separate members' club that ARFC helped to set up. ASSC's rent helps to cover the cost of running the building.

The two organisations have worked side by side for nearly forty years: ARFC looks after the grounds and facilities, and ASSC gives the community a lively place to meet.

Looking ahead

Our priorities

Keeping a site like this in good condition costs more every year, with rising maintenance and energy bills and wear on the pitches. Our priorities are to:

  • Keep every facility safe, compliant and in good repair
  • Build up our reserves and widen our sources of income
  • Bring more groups and activities onto the field
  • Improve the facilities, such as the play area, the all-weather pitch surface and the car park, as funding allows
